Issue

Closes #1008

Summary

Restructures backend telemetry and extends what reaches Sentry.

Structure

  • core/telemetry.py split into a package: tracing, context, metrics, http, llm, db, sentry/{init,filters}. Public API re-exported, importers unchanged.
  • One init_sentry() shared by the API and the Celery worker.
  • OTEL_ENABLED is checked only at the entry points (main.py, celery_app.py, core/db.py).

Tracing

  • FastAPI instrumentation drops ASGI send/receive spans at source; OTEL_SEMCONV_STABILITY_OPT_IN=http/dup adds stable http.* names.
  • Root-span attributes now reach Sentry (request body size was being dropped).
  • Bot/scanner requests (unrouted paths) are dropped from traces, logs and per-route metrics.
  • DB spans are no longer filtered out, so the Sentry Queries page has data.
  • API → Celery task linked as one trace; self-re-enqueuing poll loops start a fresh trace.

Metrics

  • HTTP: count, duration, body size, errors, unmatched requests.
  • DB: slow queries, failures (SQLSTATE-tagged), pool, connections, commit/rollback.
  • LLM: call count, duration, tokens, errors.

Errors and privacy

  • Generic 500 handler reports to Sentry; user/org/project bound to the scope.
  • Prompts and completions scrubbed from events, transactions and logs; AI integrations pinned to include_prompts=False.
  • Request body always dropped; headers/cookies/query scrubbed when PII is off; LLM task query redacted.

Config and dependencies

  • New settings: SENTRY_TRACES_SAMPLE_RATE, SENTRY_ERROR_SAMPLE_RATE, SENTRY_SEND_DEFAULT_PII, SENTRY_PROFILE_SESSION_SAMPLE_RATE, SENTRY_PROFILE_LIFECYCLE. Defaults keep current behavior; no .env changes.
  • sentry-sdk>=2.35.0; added OTel instrumentation for SQLAlchemy, Redis and botocore.

Checklist

  • Ran fastapi run --reload app/main.py or docker compose up in the repository root and test.
  • If you've fixed a bug or added code that is tested and has test cases.

📝 Walkthrough

The PR replaces a single telemetry module with a package and adds shared Sentry initialization, event filtering, and OpenTelemetry instrumentation. It adds HTTP and database metrics, updates request and job trace attributes, and changes selected logs to report content lengths rather than content.

Changes: Observability and telemetry

Layer / File(s) Summary
Sentry setup and privacy filters
backend/app/core/config.py, backend/app/core/telemetry/sentry/*, backend/app/core/sentry_filters.py, backend/app/main.py, backend/app/celery/celery_app.py, backend/app/core/exception_handlers.py, backend/app/tests/core/*sentry*, backend/app/tests/core/test_config.py, backend/app/tests/core/test_exception_handlers.py, backend/app/tests/celery/test_celery_app.py, docs/wiki/*
Shared Sentry initialization applies configured sampling and privacy settings. Filters remove selected request and GenAI content from events, transactions, and logs. Generic exceptions are submitted to Sentry.
Telemetry package and instrumentation
backend/app/core/telemetry.py, backend/app/core/telemetry/*, backend/app/core/db.py, backend/app/core/logger.py, backend/app/tests/core/telemetry/*, backend/app/tests/core/test_rate_monitor.py, backend/pyproject.toml, docs/architecture/kaapi-llm-call-ARCHITECTURE.md
The former telemetry module is replaced by a package with logging context, Sentry metrics, LLM helpers, database instrumentation, and tracing. Database instrumentation records query, pool, connection, and transaction telemetry. OpenTelemetry setup is gated by OTEL_ENABLED at application and worker entry points.
HTTP metrics and request handling
backend/app/core/telemetry/http.py, backend/app/core/middleware.py, backend/app/utils.py, backend/app/tests/core/test_middleware.py, backend/app/tests/core/test_exception_handlers.py
HTTP metrics record request count, duration, body size, error status, and unmatched routes. Middleware records matched-route metrics for successful responses and exceptions, then re-raises exceptions. Callback spans record request size, elapsed time, and response status.
Application identity, job traces, and logging
backend/app/api/deps.py, backend/app/api/routes/llm.py, backend/app/services/assessment/api/batch.py, backend/app/services/collections/*, backend/app/services/llm/jobs.py, backend/app/services/llm/providers/google_aistudio.py, backend/app/celery/tasks/job_execution.py, backend/app/tests/assessment/test_api_submission.py, backend/app/tests/celery/test_job_execution.py
Request identity is bound to Sentry, and job trace attributes use kaapi.* keys. Assessment follow-up jobs disable Sentry trace propagation. Assessment and speech-to-text logs report output or instruction length instead of the text.

Explanation

The PR also adds or changes behavior unrelated to issue #1008. Examples include Sentry error and GenAI filtering, profiling and sampling configuration, API–Celery trace propagation, Redis and Botocore instrumentation, queue and storage observability, generic exception capture, tenant Sentry user binding, cron monitoring, and related documentation and tests. These changes do not implement the linked issue's HTTP and DB monitoring objectives.

set_request_log_context claimed to handle user_id but only bound it to the
Sentry scope, which read as "user_id goes into every log line". Split it:
set_request_log_context keeps org/project (log context + tenant tags) and
bind_sentry_user owns sentry_sdk.set_user.

The user binding stays scope-only: with enable_logs shipping every INFO
record, user ids in the log context would stamp per-user cardinality on all
log volume. Per-request identity is the correlation_id tag, not set_user,
whose distinct values Sentry counts as users-affected.
Prompts and completions belong in Langfuse, not Sentry. Four leaks closed:

- scrub_genai_content strips prompt/completion attributes (gen_ai.*, legacy
ai.*, langfuse.*, plus their unpacked subkeys) from every transaction and
error event; before_send_log_filter does the same for logs.
- genai_privacy_integrations pins Sentry's auto-enabled AI integrations to
include_prompts=False. They ship full message bodies the moment
SENTRY_SEND_DEFAULT_PII flips on, and they enable themselves per installed
provider SDK, so a new provider dependency would have reopened this.
- include_local_variables=False: capture_exception on an LLM frame was
sending query.input and the response as stack-frame locals.
- max_request_body_size=never, and the request body is scrubbed regardless of
the PII setting, since on LLM routes the body is the user's message.

Three log lines carried content into Sentry via enable_logs (INFO and above):
the merged STT system instruction, 200 chars of judge output, and a
fine-tune prediction. All now log lengths instead.

core/telemetry.py had grown to ~800 lines mixing OTel setup, log context,
LLM/DB/HTTP metrics and Sentry wiring. Split by concern under
core/telemetry/ with the public API re-exported from __init__ so importers
are unchanged:

- setup.py: OTel bootstrap, span noise filter, instrument_app, flush
- context.py: log_context, LogContextFilter, tenant tags, user binding
- metrics.py: Sentry metric emit, stale-job and rate-threshold monitors
- llm.py: gen_ai span attributes, LLM call metrics
- db.py: SQLAlchemy engine hooks, DB spans and pool/slow-query metrics
- http.py: HTTP request metrics, moved out of core/middleware.py
- sentry/: init_sentry() deduplicates the sentry_sdk.init call shared by
  main.py and celery_app.py; filters.py replaces core/sentry_filters.py

Drop suppress_db_instrumentation: DB spans now ship for LLM jobs so the
Sentry Queries page covers them; waterfall noise is filtered in the UI.

Tests split to mirror the package. Pin sentry-sdk>=2.35.0 for
before_send_log.
- Renamed `_emit_sentry_metric` to `emit_sentry_metric` for clarity and consistency across telemetry modules.
- Updated all references to the renamed metric emission function in `http.py` and `llm.py`.
- Improved type hints in `metrics.py` for better clarity and type safety.
- Introduced a new `tracing.py` module to handle OpenTelemetry tracing setup, including noise filtering for spans.
- Added tests for the new tracing functionality and ensured existing telemetry tests are updated to reflect changes.
- Updated documentation to reflect changes in the telemetry structure and functionality.
… attrs, drop bot spans

- FastAPIInstrumentor: exclude ASGI send/receive spans at source instead of
  regex-dropping them in before_send_transaction; default
OTEL_SEMCONV_STABILITY_OPT_IN=http/dup so server spans carry both old and
stable http.* names (Sentry maps op/status off the old http.method).
- Span processor: SentrySpanProcessor copies attributes only for child
spans, so root-span attributes such as http.request.body.size never
reached Sentry. Forward them into transaction data.
- Drop root server spans that matched no route (scanner/bot traffic);
middleware emits a single http.server.request.unmatched counter for them
and skips the access log and per-route metrics.
- Middleware: stop setting http.* span attributes the instrumentor now
  provides; type call_next.
- send_callback failures log at WARNING: downstream webhooks being down
is not our error and was filling the Sentry issue list.
- One-line module docstrings on every telemetry module.

backend/app/core/telemetry/db.py (1)

183-183: 🚀 Performance & Scalability | 🔵 Trivial | ⚡ Quick win

Pool gauges are emitted four times per query.

One query emits all four pool gauges at four points: checkout, before_cursor_execute, after_cursor_execute, and checkin. That is about 16 Sentry metric calls per query, plus slow-query, failure, and transaction counters. This adds overhead on every DB call and inflates metric volume.

Emit pool gauges only on checkout and checkin.

Check with llm_call and llm_call with guardrails to make sure no user query, response is being emitted to sentry or if emitted they are masked

🟡 Minor · Scrub response-job request data before sending Sentry errors. · filters.py:145-159

backend/app/core/telemetry/sentry/filters.py:145-159
🔒 Security & Privacy | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Scrub response-job request data before sending Sentry errors.

The /responses route schedules run_response_job with request.model_dump(). The filter skips this task because it is not in _LLM_JOB_TASK_NAMES. Its question, callback_url, and allowed extra fields such as request_metadata can therefore remain in extra["celery-job"]["kwargs"]["request_data"]. Add the response task and its sensitive fields to the scrubber.

i see, this initialise multiple time so why do you not directly import this at top level.

any circular dependency issue?

No circular import. It stays inside the function on purpose: importing app.core.db at module level would create the DB engine in the Celery main process before fork, and every forked worker would share that connection pool.
